Blackheads, closed comedones and milia are all forms of congestion that can become trapped within or beneath the skin. While skincare can help prevent and manage congestion, sometimes existing blockages require physical removal.

What are clinical extractions?

Clinical extractions involve carefully removing compacted sebum, keratin and cellular debris from suitable blocked follicles. Each area is assessed before extraction to minimise unnecessary inflammation and trauma to the surrounding skin.

What can we extract?

Blackheads — Open, visibly congested follicles.
Closed comedones — Small skin-coloured bumps caused by trapped material.
Milia — Small, firm keratin-filled cysts beneath the skin.
Sebaceous filaments — Naturally occurring material within the follicle that can become particularly prominent or congested.

Why can congestion come back?

Extraction clears what is there now, but it doesn’t stop the follicle from becoming congested again. For persistent congestion, appropriate homecare and ongoing treatment can help manage the factors contributing to repeated build-up.

Not every bump should be extracted. Correct assessment is important to determine what can be safely cleared and what should be left alone.
