How Does Er:YAG Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
Resurfa Clear uses advanced fractional ablative Er:YAG laser technology operating at a wavelength of 2940 nm to precisely resurface the skin and stimulate its natural repair processes.
The laser energy is strongly absorbed by water within the skin, allowing controlled removal of microscopic areas of tissue while limiting unnecessary thermal damage to surrounding structures.
This controlled resurfacing initiates a wound-healing response, encouraging epidermal renewal and collagen remodelling to progressively improve skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring and visible signs of photoageing.
What Skin Concerns Can Er:YAG Laser Resurfacing Treat?
Resurfa Clear uses fractional ablative Er laser technology to target damaged and irregular skin tissue, supporting skin renewal and collagen remodelling.
From post-surgical and acne scarring to fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin texture, each treatment is tailored to the skin's condition, the depth of concern and the desired clinical outcome.
Post-Surgical Scars
Supports scar remodelling by targeting irregular tissue and stimulating collagen reorganisation, helping improve the appearance, texture and surface irregularities of fully healed surgical scars.
Acne Scarring
Targets selected atrophic acne scars, including rolling and boxcar scars, to improve uneven skin texture and the appearance of scar depressions.
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Promotes controlled skin renewal and collagen remodelling to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin surface smoothness.
Uneven Skin Texture
Resurfaces irregular skin tissue to improve roughness, uneven texture and superficial skin imperfections, creating a smoother, more refined skin surface.
Photodamage
Addresses visible signs of cumulative UV damage, including rough skin texture, fine lines and uneven skin appearance. Fractional laser resurfacing promotes epidermal renewal and collagen remodelling to improve overall skin quality.
Why Er Laser Resurfacing Works
Er laser resurfacing works by creating controlled microscopic injuries within the skin, triggering a biological repair response. As damaged tissue is replaced, fibroblast activity and extracellular matrix remodelling contribute to the formation and reorganisation of collagen, progressively improving the skin's structure and surface texture.
Precision Skin Resurfacing
The 2940 nm wavelength is strongly absorbed by water within the skin, allowing precise removal of microscopic areas of tissue with controlled thermal effects.
Collagen Remodelling
Controlled laser resurfacing initiates the skin's wound-healing response, supporting collagen reorganisation and gradual improvement in skin structure and texture.
Customised Treatment Depth
Laser settings are selected according to the treatment area, skin characteristics and severity of concern, allowing a tailored approach to resurfacing and scar revision.
Progressive, cumulative results
Results develop as the skin heals and remodels. Improvements in texture, fine lines and scarring may continue over time, with treatment frequency guided by clinical response.
Who can get this treatment?
Resurfa Clear is suitable for selected clients seeking improvement in acne scarring, surgical scars, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin texture and photodamage. As fractional ablative resurfacing involves controlled injury to the skin, suitability depends on skin type, medical history, healing capacity and treatment goals. A clinical skin assessment is required before treatment.ised to your skin.
You may be a suitable candidate if you have fully healed acne or surgical scars, fine lines, wrinkles, rough skin texture or visible signs of photoageing. Your skin should be healthy, free from active infection and capable of healing appropriately following treatment.
Treatment may be unsuitable or require medical clearance if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection, a history of keloid scarring, impaired wound healing, certain connective tissue or immune conditions, or recent significant sun exposure. Medications and previous treatments must also be reviewed.medications, have certain medical conditions affecting healing.
Before treatment, we assess your skin condition, Fitzpatrick skin type, medical history and treatment objectives. This allows us to determine whether fractional ablative resurfacing is appropriate, identify potential risks and develop an individualised treatment plan.

Not Sure? Let’s Break It Down.
What will my skin look like immediately after treatment?
Immediately following Resurfa Clear, the treated skin may appear red, swollen and sensitive, similar to a significant sunburn. Depending on treatment intensity, you may also experience pinpoint bleeding, oozing or a temporary whitish appearance to the treated tissue. Over the following days, the skin may darken, feel tight and develop superficial crusting or peeling as the healing process progresses.
Does Resurfa Clear laser treatment hurt?
Resurfa Clear is an ablative laser treatment, so some discomfort is expected. Sensations may include heat, stinging or a sharp prickling feeling during treatment. Depending on the treatment intensity and area, topical anaesthetic and cooling measures may be used to improve comfort.
How much downtime should I expect?
Downtime depends on the depth and intensity of resurfacing. Redness, swelling, sensitivity, dryness and peeling are expected as the skin heals. More intensive treatments may involve several days of oozing or crusting, with initial surface healing commonly taking approximately 5–14 days. Residual redness may persist for several weeks or longer. Your clinician will explain your expected recovery and aftercare requirements before treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments depends on the concern being addressed, its severity and the treatment intensity. Some clients may achieve their desired improvement following one intensive resurfacing session, while deeper acne scars, surgical scars and more established textural concerns may require multiple treatments. Your treatment plan will be determined following a Clinical Skin Assessment.
When will I see results?
Initial improvements in skin texture may become visible once the surface has healed and redness begins to settle. Collagen remodelling occurs more gradually, so improvements in fine lines, wrinkles and scarring may continue developing over the following 3–6 months. Results vary depending on the concern, treatment intensity and individual healing response.
Is fractional ablative Er:YAG laser safe for my skin type?
Er laser resurfacing can be appropriate for a range of skin types when carefully selected and performed by a trained clinician. However, ablative treatments carry risks including pigmentation changes, infection, prolonged redness and scarring. Clients with darker skin types may have an increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A Clinical Skin Assessment is required to determine suitability and discuss individual risks.
Are the results permanent?
Structural improvements to existing scars and skin texture can be long-lasting, although complete scar removal cannot be guaranteed. The natural ageing process continues, and further sun exposure may contribute to new photodamage, fine lines and changes in skin quality. Consistent sun protection and appropriate skincare help maintain treatment results.
Can I treat multiple concerns in one session?
Yes. Resurfa Clear may address several concerns within the same treatment area, including acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin texture. Treatment settings and intensity are selected according to the skin's condition and the concerns being addressed. Some areas may require a separate treatment approach or session.
Do I need a consultation first?
Yes. A Clinical Skin Assessment is required before Resurfa Clear treatment. We assess your skin condition, medical history, medications, previous treatments and healing considerations to determine suitability. We also discuss realistic outcomes, potential complications, expected downtime and the preparation and aftercare required.
What should I avoid before and after Resurfa Clear?
Preparation and aftercare are essential for safe healing. You will need to avoid tanning and excessive UV exposure, temporarily discontinue certain active skincare products as directed, and follow a prescribed post-treatment skincare routine. During recovery, avoid picking or exfoliating the treated skin, and follow your clinician's instructions regarding cleansing, moisturising, sun protection and returning to normal activities.
Support your results with the right skincare.
Following ablative laser resurfacing, the skin requires carefully selected aftercare to support re-epithelialisation, restore barrier function and minimise complications. Your post-treatment skincare routine is tailored to each stage of healing, with appropriate products introduced as the skin recovers.
