Types of Pigmentation

Not all pigmentation is the same and neither are the causes. Here’s a quick look at the different pigment types we treat, so you can better understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

Melasma

Caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the hair follicles- often mistaken for clogged pores. Appears as small, uniform bumps and can feel itchy or stubborn. Needs antifungal treatment, not acne products.

PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpig-mentation)

Deep, painful breakouts often along the jawline, chin, or neck. Fluctuates with cycles, stress, and internal imbalance. Hormonal acne needs consistency, barrier repair, and patience- not harsh scrubs.

Hyper-pigmentation

Red, swollen breakouts that may include papules, pustules, or cysts. These types are more likely to scar and need targeted, anti-inflammatory treatments with deep healing support.

Age spots, Sun spots

Blackheads and whiteheads caused by excess oil and congestion. These are often the “build-up” stage of acne and respond well to regular professional extractions and proper homecare routines.

What are the symptoms of Pigmentation?

Pigmentation can show up as dark patches, uneven tone, or blotchy discolouration- often deepened by sun, hormones, or inflammation. It’s a complex skin concern, influenced by genetics, UV exposure, hormonal shifts, injury, and chronic inflammation.
At Lafont Advanced Skin Clinic, we treat pigmentation by understanding why it’s happening- not just what it looks like.

Melasma PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) Age Spots, Sun Spots Hypopigmentation Freckles

Melasma

Melasma shows up as symmetrical brown or greyish patches on the face– often the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead.
It’s triggered by hormones, heat, and UV exposure, and worsens without sun protection.
Treatment takes time and must focus on calming inflammation, suppressing pigment formation, and protecting the skin daily.

PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)

PIH appears as dark spots left behind after acne, eczema, injury, or picking.
It’s especially common in deeper skin tones and tends to linger without support.
We treat PIH by reducing inflammation, restoring the barrier, and gradually fading pigment without trauma to the skin.

Age Spots, Sun Spots

Also called solar lentigines, these flat brown spots are caused by cumulative sun exposure over time.
They usually appear on the face, chest, shoulders, or hands.
We treat them with brightening actives, advanced exfoliation, and strict SPF– while protecting the skin’s barrier.

Hypopigmentation

Hypopigmentation is the loss of pigment in the skin– often after trauma, inflammation, or certain treatments.
It appears as pale, lighter patches and can take time to repigment.
While some cases naturally resolve, others benefit from microneedling, LED, and nourishing repair-focused support.

Freckles

Freckles are small, flat brown spots that appear with sun exposure– especially in those with lighter skin types or genetic predisposition.
They’re not harmful, but some clients prefer a more even complexion.

If you want to fade freckles, we use pigment-inhibiting ingredients, gentle resurfacing, and strict SPF to reduce their visibility without damaging your skin.

Why Proper Pigmentation Treatment Matters

#

Pigmentation isn’t just cosmetic– it can affect how you see yourself, how confident you feel, and how your skin functions over time.
Left untreated or misdiagnosed, pigmentation can deepen, spread, or return– especially when inflammation and sun exposure are ignored.

At Lafont Advanced Skin Clinic, we don’t chase quick fades or harsh bleaching.
We take a skin-first, evidence-based approach– restoring clarity by working with your biology, not against it.

Whether you’re dealing with melasma, sun spots, PIH, or hormonal pigment, we tailor every treatment to your skin’s triggers, sensitivities, and healing capacity.

Because when pigment is treated with precision, consistency, and care– your skin responds. And the results speak for themselves.

Proven Pigmentation Treatments That Work

#

Electroporation

Needle-free technology that infuses pigment-regulating actives deep into the skin– improving clarity, calming inflammation, and restoring barrier health.

Healite LED Light Therapy

Reduces inflammation, repairs skin at a cellular level, and supports fading of pigment by boosting the skin’s natural healing response.

Chemical Peels

Targets surface pigmentation by lifting dull skin, accelerating cell turnover, and improving tone, texture, and radiance– especially for sun damage and PIH.

Microneedling

Stimulates collagen and renews skin from within– helping to fade deeper pigment, smooth uneven tone, and restore skin integrity long-term.

From Struggle to Skin Confidence

I started a skin membership with Lafont as I wanted to treat my acne scarring and texture issues and I’m genuinely blown away by the results! Virginie and her team have such a wealth of knowledge and are so passionate about their clients and their skin journey. Appreciate you all!

Not Sure? Let’s Break It Down.

I’ve tried everything- how do I know what will actually work for my skin?

Because we don’t guess. Every skin journey at Lafont begins with a professional skin consultation- no fluff, no upsell, just real analysis using advanced technology and years of experience. Whether you're dealing with hormonal acne, scarring, pigmentation, or just general sensitivity, we don’t give you generic answers. We give you a personalised strategy that actually makes sense foryourskin.

Are your products medical-grade, natural, or both?

Both- and more. We use brands like iS Clinical, Aspect Dr, Cosmedix, Societe, DermaQuest, and PCA Skin- all of which are designed to treat complex skin concerns with results-driven actives. They’re free from irritating junk, and packed with ingredients your skin can recognise and respond to. Think: chirally-correct formulations, botanical actives, and science-backed delivery systems. Basically: gentle enough for barrier repair, powerful enough to shift real skin concerns.

What happens in a treatment- will I leave red or raw?

Not unless that’s the goal. Every treatment is tailored to your skinon the day. That means we always factor in barrier health, sensitivity, your lifestyle (e.g. if you're heading to an event), and your long-term plan. Some treatments have zero downtime. Others- like microneedling or clinical peels can involve redness or peeling. But you’ll always know exactly what to expect, and your post-care is mapped out for you.

Can I book a treatment without knowing exactly what I need?

Yes- and to be honest, we prefer that. You don’t need to know the name of a peel or the settings on a device. You just need to know what’s bothering you, and we’ll handle the rest. Booking a Skin Health Consultation is the best way to start if you're unsure. If you're after something lighter like LED or a basic peel, you can book that directly — and we’ll still customise it on the day.

Do you treat darker skin tones?

Yes- confidently and with experience. Treating melanin-rich skin requires understanding, not just caution. We know how to treat pigmentation without making it worse, how to support barrier health without overstripping, and how to navigate conditions like PIH or acne scarring on deeper skin types. Representation matters here. So does science. You can trust that you're safe with us.

Is it worth coming in if I’ve already seen a derm?

Definitely. Dermatologists are essential for things like prescriptions and diagnosing medical conditions- but most don’t have the time or tools to support your skin long-term. That’s where we come in. Our work is collaborative- we can support your skin between derm visits, help strengthen your barrier after prescription use, or take over the maintenance and results phase once you’ve finished with oral medication like isotretinoin or antibiotics.

Will I need to change my skincare products?

Maybe- but only if they’re holding you back. We won’t rip everything off your shelf, and we won’t make you feel bad for using supermarket skincare. But if something’s causing issues or blocking progress, we’ll explain why and suggest upgrades. You’ll never feel pressured, and we always work within your budget where we can. Our goal is for you to understand your skin- not feel overwhelmed by it.
