Types of Acne

Not all acne is the same- and neither are the triggers. Here’s a quick look at the different types we treat, so you can better understand what’s going on under the surface.

Fungal Acne

Caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the hair follicles- often mistaken for clogged pores. Appears as small, uniform bumps and can feel itchy or stubborn. Needs antifungal treatment, not acne products.

Hormonal Acne

Deep, painful breakouts often along the jawline, chin, or neck. Fluctuates with cycles, stress, and internal imbalance. Hormonal acne needs consistency, barrier repair, and patience- not harsh scrubs.

Inflammatory Acne

Red, swollen breakouts that may include papules, pustules, or cysts. These types are more likely to scar and need targeted, anti-inflammatory treatments with deep healing support.

Non-Inflammatory Acne

Blackheads and whiteheads caused by excess oil and congestion. These are often the “build-up” stage of acne and respond well to regular professional extractions and proper homecare routines.

What are the symptoms of Acne?

Acne presents a multifaceted challenge in skincare due to its sensitivity to numerous factors, including diet, lifestyle, weather, hormones, medication, and genetic predisposition.

Closed Comedones Open Comedones Cystic Lesions Nodules Papules Pustules

Closed Comedones

These are small, flesh-coloured bumps beneath the skin surface caused by clogged pores. They haven’t broken through yet- which is why they’re often referred to as “under the skin” congestion.

If left untreated, they can develop into inflamed acne. Treating them early with exfoliation, extractions, and barrier-focused support is key.

Open Comedones

Also known as blackheads, these are pores clogged with oil and dead skin that remain open at the surface, where the contents oxidise and turn dark.

They’re not “dirt”- and scrubbing harder won’t help. The right mix of exfoliation, gentle extraction, and barrier-friendly support can reduce build-up without aggravating the skin.

Cystic Lesions

These are the deep, painful breakouts that sit under the skin- often swollen, tender, and stubborn. Cysts don’t come to a head and are prone to scarring if picked or mistreated.

They need slow, targeted healing, not harsh products. The right clinical treatments can reduce inflammation, prevent new cysts, and support your skin’s recovery from within.

Nodules

Nodules are large, hard, and deeply rooted lumps that sit under the skin’s surface. They don’t come to a head and can feel sore, tender, and persistent- often lasting weeks or even months.

Because they’re so deep, over-the-counter products won’t touch them. They need targeted clinical care, inflammation control, and skin barrier support to prevent permanent damage or scarring.

Papules

Papules are small, red, inflamed bumps that often feel sore to the touch. They form when pores become severely clogged, triggering inflammation beneath the surface.

Unlike pustules, papules don’t have a visible white head- but picking or squeezing them can easily make things worse. They need calming, anti-inflammatory treatment and gentle repair to prevent them from escalating or scarring.

Pustules

Pustules are inflamed blemishes filled with visible pus- often mistaken for “poppable” pimples. They form when the skin’s immune response kicks in, trapping infection and oil beneath the surface.

Tempting as it is, squeezing pustules can push bacteria deeper into the skin, leading to more breakouts, scarring, or even infection. The best approach is controlled extractions, antibacterial support, and barrier repair to calm the skin and prevent future flare-ups.

Why Proper Acne Treatment Matters

#

Acne isn’t just about breakouts- it can chip away at your confidence, comfort, and long-term skin health. Left untreated, it can lead to inflammation, scarring, and pigmentation that linger far beyond the breakout itself.

At Lafont Advanced Skin Clinic, we don’t chase “quick fixes.” We take a results-led, skin-first approach- working with your biology, not against it. Whether you're dealing with painful cysts, blackheads that won’t budge, or post-acne marks that just won’t fade, we tailor every treatment to your skin’s unique needs.

Because when your skin is calm, supported, and genuinely understood- it shows.

My skin felt instantly clearer.

I couldn’t believe how much congestion was cleared during one treatment. Everything was explained as we went, and the extractions felt careful and controlled rather than harsh. My skin was slightly pink afterwards, but the Healite LED was incredibly calming and it settled much faster than I expected. By the next day, my skin looked clearer, smoother and far less congested.

Clinical Extractions: Your Questions Answered

What can be extracted?

Clinical extractions are most suitable for blackheads, closed comedones and compacted superficial congestion. Every lesion is assessed individually, and we will only extract what can be treated safely without forcing or unnecessarily damaging the surrounding skin.

Can you extract inflamed or cystic acne?

Deep, inflamed or cystic lesions are generally not suitable for manual extraction. Applying pressure to these lesions may increase inflammation and the risk of pigmentation or scarring. We may recommend a Clinical Skin Assessment or an alternative treatment plan instead.

What happens in a treatment- will I leave red or raw?

Not unless that’s the goal. Every treatment is tailored to your skinon the day. That means we always factor in barrier health, sensitivity, your lifestyle (e.g. if you're heading to an event), and your long-term plan. Some treatments have zero downtime. Others- like microneedling or clinical peels can involve redness or peeling. But you’ll always know exactly what to expect, and your post-care is mapped out for you.

Will my skin be red afterwards?

Some temporary redness, sensitivity and small localised marks are normal following extractions. The amount of redness depends on the depth and extent of the congestion treated. Every appointment includes Healite LED Light Therapy to calm the skin and support post-treatment recovery.

Why is Healite LED included?

Healite LED Light Therapy is performed after the extractions to calm visible redness and support the skin’s natural recovery processes. It completes the treatment with a dedicated recovery step after the skin has been manually treated.

How often should I book clinical extractions?

Treatment frequency varies according to your skin, the severity of the congestion and how quickly new blockages develop. Some clients need a single targeted treatment, while recurring congestion may require regular appointments alongside appropriate home care.

Will extractions stop the congestion from returning?

Extractions remove suitable congestion that is already present, but they do not prevent new blockages from forming. Consistent home care and an appropriate treatment plan can help manage the factors contributing to recurring blackheads and comedones.

Support clearer skin between treatments

Clinical extractions clear the congestion present today. The right home care can help calm the skin, protect it after treatment and reduce the buildup that contributes to recurring blackheads and comedones.
